What to Pack for a Bali Yacht Day

Most of what goes wrong on a yacht day is avoidable with a short, sensible packing list — here's what actually matters and what you can leave at the hotel.
Sun protection
- ◆Reef-safe sunscreen — most reef areas around Nusa Penida ask for it, and regular sunscreen contaminates the water you're there to enjoy
- ◆A hat that won't blow off — secured with a strap if you have one
- ◆Sunglasses with a strap, ideally polarized for the glare off the water
- ◆A light long-sleeve layer or rash guard — more effective than reapplying sunscreen every hour
For the water
- ◆Swimwear, obviously, plus a change of dry clothes for the ride back
- ◆A dry bag for your phone and anything else you don't want wet
- ◆Your own mask if you prefer a specific fit — most charters supply gear, but some people like their own
Comfort for the day
- ◆Seasickness tablets if you're at all prone to motion sickness, taken before departure not after symptoms start
- ◆A light jacket if you're staying out toward sunset — it cools down fast once the sun's down
- ◆Cash — for lunch on the island if your trip includes a stop there, and for tipping the crew
What you don't need
Heavy camera gear you're worried about getting wet (ask if a photographer add-on is available instead), a full change of outfits, or anything you'd be upset to lose overboard. Travel light — the crew has snorkel gear, towels, and drinks covered.
